Lanark Golf Club was founded on 4 October 1851 on Lanark Moor, making it the oldest inland golf club in the world. The first six holes were designed by George Sayers and built by Old Tom Morris, paid £3 and ten shillings for his work; Morris returned in 1897 to lay out a full eighteen holes on the same ground. James Braid later refined the layout further, adding several new holes that shaped the course into the one played today. Remarkably, the club has never moved from its original site — golf has now been played continuously on the Moor for over 170 years, a rare thread connecting the modern course directly back to its 1851 founding.
