The first course at Dundonald opened in 1911, laid out by 1883 Open Champion Willie Fernie. After two world wars left the site barely recognisable, Loch Lomond Golf Club bought the land in 2003 and brought in Kyle Phillips — fresh from building Kingsbarns — to create a modern Ayrshire links that felt as though it had always been there. Phillips wove new features into the existing dunes and sandy ground rather than imposing a design on top of them. The rebuilt course has since become a fixture on the professional calendar, hosting the men's and women's Scottish Opens on multiple occasions between 2015 and 2022, and serving as an Open Championship Final Qualifying venue in the years leading into St Andrews and beyond.
